John began his career at a young age, making home movies with his dad’s 8mm camera in the basement. His first work was 1977’s Bloodshed Beyond The Stars. While brilliant, the film had a striking resemblance in plot, theme, and characterization to another science fiction film that was popular that summer, Star Wars. Nonetheless, he was snapped up by MTV Networks in 1992 to work on the groundbreaking television series MTV Sports. At MTV he directed, produced and edited MTV Sports and other shows and specials, garnering 6 Emmy nominations and one win. In 1998 John started his own production company, Newgrange Films, directing, producing, and editing projects for Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, ESPN, TNT, and probably a few other networks that use some combination of letters. John co-wrote and directed a feature film, Turning Green, which was released in theaters in 2009. Today he is a Promax Award-winning director living in Manhattan with his lovely wife Jenn, and their two children Brendan and Keira. But to this day, his most ardent supporter is still his imaginary childhood friend, Dicky Crabtree.
